Undergarments

>

Arc-rated underwear generally provides a higher system arc-rating than non-melting, flammable fiber underwear. Non-melting, flammable fiber underwear can be used in a layered system but must be completely covered by arc-rated clothing. To prevent flammable underwear from igniting in the event of an arc flash, the PPE ensemble’s arc-rating must be sufficient to prevent breakopen of the innermost arc-rated layer. If the innermost arc-rated layer breaks open, then the underwear could catch on fire and severely burn the worker.

Underwear that is not arc-rated cannot be used to increase the arc-rating of a garment or a clothing system.
