PPE Categories Method (Tables Method)

1. Locate TASK. Using Table 130.5(C), locate the task to determine if there is a likelihood of an arc hazard occurrence (indicated by the Yes/No column). If the answer is "Yes," move to step 2.
2. Locate EQUIPMENT.  Use Table 130.7(C)(15)(a) for AC equipment and Table 130.7(C)(15)(b) for DC equipment. (The equipment described in the table must be commensurate with the equipment involved in the job task. If the specifications/ parameters are exceeded or there are any variations, do not proceed further with this method.) Locate the equipment commensurate with the equipment involved in the job task and note the PPE category number.
3. Locate PPE CATEGORY. Using Table 130.7(C)(15)(c), locate the appropriate PPE category. The table contains a detailed list of PPE required in each category.
4. If this method is used, the category determined must be recorded on the equipment’s arc flash hazard label.

Be aware of old labels that may make use of an outdated category numbering system. This can cause confusion regarding what level of PPE ensemble is required.

Older labels on equipment or clothing may make reference to the "Hazard/ Risk Category" or HRC. This term was eliminated in the 2015 edition of NFPA 70E and replaced with the term "PPE category," "arc-rated PPE category," or simply "PPE level." Also note NFPA 70E editions prior to 2015 included a PPE Category 0, for non-arc-rated garments made from untreated or non-melting natural fiber. This category was eliminated in the 2015 edition.
